Cowboys Could Have Done Much Better than 'Safe Hire' Mike McCarthy

Colin Cowherd: “Mike McCarthy would have NOT have been my first choice for Cowboys head coach. This was a year where there were some amazing candidates – Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley, Matt Rhule, Josh McDaniels, and Ron Rivera. This sort of feels like a really ‘safe’ hire. McCarthy fits Cleveland because they need his maturity, his stability, and his guidance, but that’s not what Dallas needs. Dallas needs a Sean McVay, a Kyle Shanahan, a Matt Nagy, they need CLEVER. They’ve got talent and don’t need stability. Dallas needs some POW, some progressive, some clever, some really smart, some new, some fresh, and that’s not 56-year-old Mike McCarthy. Is McCarthy really someone EVERYONE else wants? This feels like settling for a head coach. You can be a great coach but not a good fit. Green Bay was 13-3 WITHOUT him.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks the Dallas Cowboys’ hiring of former Super Bowl winning Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was an air ball for a fraught franchise who had the opportunity to go big in a loaded field of coaching candidates.

Colin doesn’t think McCarthy is a bad coach but says it’s a bad fit for a Cowboys offense who needed more of an offensive innovator the likes of Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley, Matt Rhule, and Josh McDaniels, who could have invigorated a Cowboys offense that has the weapons to be dangerous with the right scheme.

Check out the video above as Colin details why he’s shocked the Cowboys went so conservative by bringing McCarthy in instead of a sexier name.
