Rainey Joins UofL Men’s Basketball Roster

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Will Rainey, who has been a member of the Spalding University basketball team for the past three seasons, has joined the University of Louisville men’s basketball team as a walk-on.

A 6-3, 180-pound senior guard from Atherton High School in Louisville, Rainey will participate in practice with the Cardinals this season, but sit out of competition this year after transferring from Spalding. He has one collegiate season of eligibility remaining.

“We’re glad to have Will as a member of our team,” said UofL Coach Chris Mack. “We discovered him in our recent campus walk-on tryouts and are confident that he will provide a significant help to our team in practice.”

In three seasons at Spalding (2015-18), an NCAA Division III school in Louisville, Rainey totaled 102 points, 44 rebounds and 26 assists in 45 career games. His top game at Spalding came his freshman year when he scored eight points, connecting on all three of his field goal attempts, in a 78-56 victory over Iowa Wesleyan.

A sport administration major, Rainey averaged 15.6 points and 4.2 rebounds as a senior at Atherton in 2014-15. An all-district selection in 2015, he scored a career-high 35 points against Western High School as a senior, adding six rebounds while connecting on 13-of-23 shots from the field.

Rainey averaged 10.5 points and 3.1 rebounds as a junior at Atherton. He also competed on the Atherton track and field team in the long jump, triple jump and high jump events. He was fourth in the state as a senior in the long jump with a 22 feet, 6.5 inches leap.

Former Cardinal All-Americas Charlie Tyra (1954-57) and Rick Wilson (1974-78) were both products of Atherton High School.
