FRANKFORT, Ky.-- Former Kentucky first lady and Miss America Phyllis George has been laid to rest.

A private memorial service was held Monday in the Kentucky capitol rotunda for George, who died earlier this month of a rare blood disorder.  She was 70.

Crowned Miss America in 1971, Phyllis George became a trailblazing sportscaster as the first female co-anchor of "The NFL Today."

She was married to former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown Jr.

Her daughter, CNN correspondent Pamela Brown, says her mother was a role model for how life should be lived.
