Authorities say a 45-year-old woman has died from an apparent alligator attack on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina Monday morning. If confirmed, it would be the first fatal alligator attack in decades in South Carolina.

Witnesses told Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies that they saw the woman walking the dog near a lagoon at Sea Pines Plantation, a gated community on Hilton Head, when she was attacked by the alligator and pulled underwater just after 9:30 a.m. local time.

Some people were able to pull her out of the water, and she was still alive, but later died at the scene. She was identified by Beaufort County Coroner as Cassandra Cline, 45, a resident of Hilton Head island.

“They were able to get her out of the water and she was still alive, but she died at the scene," according to David Lucas of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

The woman's dog did not appear to be hurt, the sheriff's office added.

Deputies located the alligator, which was around 8-feet long, and dispatched it at the scene the sheriff's office said.
